Two Spanish fighter planes intervene in a Russian drone attack against Ukraine in Romania

The Romanian Defense Ministry has said that Russian forces have carried out a new series of drone attacks against civilian and infrastructure targets in Ukraine, near the river border with Romania.

The Romanian Ministry of Defense reported on Wednesday that two F-18 fighters of the Spanish Air and Space Force had to intervene in response to the threat against Romanian soil posed by a Russian drone attack on Ukrainian territory.

The Romanian Defense Ministry has reported that Russian forces have carried out a new series of drone attacks against civilian and infrastructure targets in Ukraine , near the river border with Romania, in Tulcea county.

Following the detection of groups of drones heading towards Ukrainian airspace, close to Romanian airspace, the National Military Command Centre activated the device to alert the population of Tulcea and Galați counties, sending warning messages at 02.41 am.

To monitor the situation, two F-18 fighter planes of the Spanish Air Force, which are part of NATO’s Reinforced Air Policing mission, took off at around 00:50 hours from the 57th Air Base ‘Mihail Kogalniceanu’.

Two F-16 fighters of the Romanian Air Force also took off at around 02:40 from the 86th Air Base in Borcea. The Spanish aircraft of the ‘Paznic’ Detachment completed their mission at around 03:00, followed two hours later by the Romanian aircraft.
