“ I never imagined I would have to say goodbye so soon. Thank you for being part of our lives.” This is how one of the dozens of letters that fans of the former member of One Direction, Liam Payne, have left at an improvised altar in Zaragoza with roses, candles, letters and photographs of the artist to say goodbye to the recently deceased singer.
The British artist died on October 16 after falling from a third floor in a hotel in Argentina when he was only 31 years old. After this tragic event, One Direction fans have shown that they were, are and will be “Directioners” forever, and for this reason, they have created altars in various parts of the world and in some of the largest cities in Spain , such as Zaragoza.
The memorial service for Liam Payne in the capital of Aragon took place this Sunday, October 20, on the
steps of the Náutico, when many fans of the group gathered to pay tribute to Payne. They sang, looking up at the sky, songs by the band such as “Hey Angel”, “Story of my life”, “Walking in the wind” or “Little things”.
“Liam, you have always been one of the most fundamental pillars of my life . I would like to say that we are very proud of you,” said one of the farewell letters. “Thank you for helping me and being with me for so many years without knowing me. You were a light in my moments of darkness. I will always carry you in my soul,” said one card in a bouquet of roses.
Fans, who are still in shock after the artist’s death, recalled in their texts how important Liam Payne’s musical career has been to them , both solo and during his time in One Direction (2010 – 2016), alongside his bandmates Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson.
Even though it has been more than a week since the accident, fans from Zaragoza are asking that this small tribute to the artist, which includes flowers, pictures and even spoons – alluding to one of the artist’s jokes – be treated with respect and that it not be removed until the burial takes place, the date of which is still unknown. “Now you are the star that shines the brightest. You will always be remembered,” the fans emphasize.
