Solarig has announced the construction of a sustainable aviation fuel plant (Sustainable Aviation Fuel,
SAF) in the Platea industrial estate in Teruel . The project, called Turboleta SAF, involves an investment of
1.15 billion euros and will cover an area of approximately 10 hectares.
They claim that the plant will contribute to reducing 340,000 tons of CO2 annually and will generate more than 1,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction, and more than 180 direct and indirect jobs during operation. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027 and it is expected to be ready by 2030.
The project will have an annual production of more than 75,000 tonnes of sustainable fuel, equivalent to 33,000 flights between Zaragoza and London considering a 50% SAF mix. It is assumed the decarbonisation of 340,000 tonnes of CO2 per year and the capture and use of 160,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
In total, Solarig has a production portfolio of 400,000 tons of SAF per year in Spain. ‘Turboleta SAF’ will incorporate dedicated renewable assets with direct connection to the industrial plant: a photovoltaic solar plant, a wind farm and a battery storage system.
This plant will promote the creation of around 1,200 direct and indirect technical jobs. The president and CEO of Solarig, Miguel Ángel Calleja, has assessed that the installation places Teruel in a “leading position in terms of the development of sustainable fuel production”. “We have the natural resources of the region: the sun, the wind and the water. We are going to take advantage of the biomethane and biogenic CO2 from our facilities, produced from agricultural and livestock waste in the region”, Calleja said.
In addition, users of nearby infrastructures such as the airports of Teruel and Zaragoza will be able to benefit from this new facility by having local sustainable fuel production.
‘Turboleta SAF’ joins the ‘ Numantia SAF ‘ project that Solarig is developing in Soria. As part of the financial consolidation of the project, this initiative is part of the ‘ Program of incentives for renewable hydrogen production and consumption projects (clusters or valleys)’ called by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), a call financed through European Next Generation funds.
