FIBA has chosen Zaragoza to host the final six of the next three editions of the Women’s Euroleague ( 2025, 2026 and 2027). This year it will take place at the Príncipe Felipe from April 9 to 13 and Casademont Femenino is expected to be among the finalists of this new format. In this sense, the work carried out by the club, the Government of Aragon and the city council have been key to making Zaragoza the venue for the final phase of the tournament.
The presentation ceremony took place on Monday, with the help of the president of the Spanish Basketball Federation, Jorge Garbajosa, the mayor Natalia Chueca and the President of the Government of Aragon, Jorge Azcón. The latter has underlined the contribution of the administrations so that after 30 years the Zaragoza pavilion does not host a final of this magnitude. This event represents a firm commitment by the club to contribute to the celebration of the European Capital of Sport in Zaragoza in 2027.
Garbajosa said that it is a day of great happiness, as “it is not a culmination, but the beginning of something”. “It is a city that loves basketball and has some of the most passionate fans in Europe. I would like to express my gratitude not only to the host club, Casademont Zaragoza, but also to the Government of Aragon, the city of Zaragoza and the Spanish Basketball Federation for making this long-term vision a reality”, he concluded.
The mayor has highlighted the work being carried out by the institutions to make Zaragoza the European city of sport. “The fact that it will be the venue for the next three years fits with the city we are planning. It is a strategic decision that changes the city” and she assures that “it generates a change and a social and economic impact for the city”, where she has mentioned other international sporting events that are being hosted from the Aragonese capital, such as the final of the Queen’s Cup.
For his part, Azcón acknowledges that the commitment to basketball “has been going on for a long time, but in the women’s category it has been greater in recent years”, thanks above all to Casademont Femenino, since this “would probably not be happening without their work”.
The president also praised the investment that is being made during his term in office, since hosting the next three editions “has an extraordinarily important impact”. This is due to the tourism that will be generated in the city in terms of the increase in consumers in “hotels, hospitality and commerce”.
However, he has indicated that this budgetary effort “is not only profitable from a sporting point of view, but also from an economic one”. In this case, he has provided a comparative figure with respect to the previous Aragonese government. “We have increased the 2024 sports budget by 40% to reach 13 million euros, otherwise international events cannot be hosted. Of the 30,000 euros of the previous legislature, we allocated 600,000 to bring in major events. That is, 2000% more, multiplying it by thirteen.”
In this final-six, played between April 9 and 13, Cantero‘s team will try to be at home . With four wins under their belts, they have serious options to qualify and dye red a Euroleague final phase in which the best players of the European continent will participate.
