Zaragoza has reached a new demographic milestone. The capital of Aragon has surpassed Seville in population and officially becomes the fourth most populated city in Spain, according to the latest data provided by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
The INE population census, dated January 1, 2024, reflects that Zaragoza has 691,037 inhabitants, marking a significant increase compared to the 683,949 registered in 2023 and the 675,361 in 2022. This increase contrasts with the more moderate growth of Seville, which has reached 686,741 inhabitants in 2024, compared to 684,164 in the previous year.
This population growth in Zaragoza is part of a general context of demographic growth in Spain, which has added more than 500,000 inhabitants in the last year, reaching 48,619,695 inhabitants. The INE highlights that 13.4% of the population has foreign nationality, and that 18.2% were born outside the country, which underlines the role of immigration as a driver of demographic growth.
This increase has occurred in a period in which Spain has seen a strong growth in citizens of Colombian, Peruvian and Venezuelan origin, countries that have contributed significantly to population growth in several Spanish cities.
The largest relative population increases in Spain have occurred in Torrevieja (6.7%), Arrecife (5.1%) and Granadilla de Abona (3.9%). In contrast, the largest decreases have occurred in Cádiz (-0.8%), San Fernando (-0.3%) and Getxo (-0.2%).
