The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has awarded two new contracts, valued at 17 million euros, to adapt the Madrid- Zaragoza section to Rail Motorway services . This ambitious project seeks to strengthen freight traffic by train, while reducing the carbon footprint and promoting sustainability in transport.
Within this plan, several stations in the province of Zaragoza will benefit from the extension of their sidings to 750 metres, essential to allow the crossing and parking of long trains. Among the stations that will see these improvements are Paracuellos-Sabiñán, Morés, Épila and Grisén, the latter already under construction.
In addition, new track devices will be installed at these stations, ensuring a modern and efficient infrastructure for the trains that will connect the Zaragoza Plaza terminal with Algeciras and other logistics hubs. These investments, together with the implementation of advanced systems such as the Automatic Blocking System (BAB) between Guadalajara and Calatayud, are a step forward in railway modernisation.
ZARAGOZA, EPICENTER OF SUSTAINABLE TRADE
The Algeciras-Zaragoza route , with connections to Europe and Morocco, will allow around 360 trucks a day to travel by train instead of road, eliminating 360,000 kilometres of daily traffic and saving 620,000 tonnes of CO2 a year. This project not only improves logistical efficiency, but also positions Zaragoza as a pillar in the development of sustainable multimodal transport in Spain.
The project has financial support from the NextGenerationEU programme, part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
Thanks to this investment, Zaragoza consolidates its role in the Algeciras-Zaragoza corridor, a key route for the transport of goods in the Iberian Peninsula and beyond.
