As is now traditional at the beginning of each year, the New York Times has once again surprised us with its list of the 52 recommended destinations to visit during 2025, and among those chosen, there are only two Spanish sites. Specifically, the New York Times recommends visiting a small place in Aragon that, although perhaps not as well known internationally, has a unique beauty and appeal.

This is a destination that has managed to combine history, culture and nature, becoming one of the most special jewels of Aragon. The publication highlights its authentic charm and the richness of its heritage combined with its history, making it a must-see for the most demanding travellers.

This destination is Canfranc, a small town in Huesca that, despite its size, has earned a prominent place among the most recommended trips by international experts. Canfranc, with its history linked to the international train and its impressive railway station (currently a luxury hotel), is emerging as the ideal destination for those looking for a different experience in the heart of the Pyrenees.

CANFRANC, THE DESTINATION RECOMMENDED BY THE NEW YORK

Located in the La Jacetania region, Canfranc has been chosen for its incredible natural beauty and historical wealth. The New York Times particularly highlights the famous international train station, which was once one of the largest buildings in Europe.

The reconstruction of this emblematic place has allowed visitors not only to learn about its history, but also to enjoy luxury accommodation in a natural setting. Visiting Canfranc is like walking through an open-air museum, where architecture and nature combine harmoniously.

A TRAIN STATION REBUILT AS A LUXURY HOTEL

Canfranc International Railway Station , which closed in 1970 when a train derailed, is one of the town’s main attractions. Following a meticulous restoration, the old station has been transformed into a luxurious five-star hotel, the Canfranc Estación, a Royal Hideaway Hotel, which combines the best of contemporary design with the splendour of the golden age of railways.

Guests have the opportunity to stay in a building of great historical value, surrounded by the mountainous landscapes of the Aragonese Pyrenees. The Canfranc train station has become a reference for luxury tourism in the region, offering a unique experience in the heart of Huesca.

This iconic train, commonly known as “El Canfranero”, will once again run to connect this town in Huesca with Zaragoza. This will make the experience even more immersive for the traveller who will return to the 1920s.

WHAT TO SEE NEAR CANFRANC

Canfranc is not only known for its train station, but also offers a wealth of activities and places of interest in the surrounding area. Nature lovers can enjoy hiking trails that take them through the spectacular landscapes of the Pyrenees. In addition, the Candanchú ski resort is very close, perfect for snow lovers and those who want to ski for the first time.

Just a few minutes away, visitors can explore the historic city of Jaca, with its citadel, Romanesque cathedral or famous old town. Tourists are also recommended to relax in the Parque Natural de los Valles Occidentales, one of the most impressive natural areas in Aragon.
