The President of Aragon, Jorge Azcón, is taking part this Thursday in the Plenary Session of the Committee of the Regions of the European Union. From Brussels, Azcón has discussed some of the issues that mark the current affairs of community politics, with an emphasis on defence and the increase in the budget in this area in the coming years . A scenario, says the head of the Executive, where Aragon wants to consolidate itself as an
industrial hub taking advantage of its ” strengths “, such as the San Gregorio training ground and the rest of the Army’s facilities.
Azcón has pointed out that they want to transfer to the field of defence the business climate or the “technological” and “logistical” potential that have boosted investment with the arrival of other industries. “The EU member countries are going to have to increase their defence budgets,” he stressed. This, added to the role played by the Army in the Community, according to him, “very important.”
In this regard, the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, will visit Zaragoza next Monday to learn about the ‘Aragón Defence Hub’ project . It will be the special launch of an initiative that aims to contribute to technological progress, cybersecurity and research, according to its official communication channels.
On the other hand, Azcón referred in Brussels to the “opportunity” that assuming the Vice-Presidency of the Committee of the Regions will represent in the summer of 2026. Not only to boost the defence market, but also border connections with France (Central Pyrenees crossing and the Somport railway tunnel). “These are very important issues and it is important that the voice of Aragon is heard in Brussels,” said the president.
Another of the main areas of concern for the Community is the European Union‘s cohesion funds. Azcón has highlighted their impact on policies against depopulation or the aforementioned cross-border connections. “The EU seeks equality and that is what we are doing in Brussels, ensuring that these items are important in the Budgets of the Autonomous Communities,” he added.
