Danish multinational Scanmetals inaugurated its new non-ferrous metal recovery plant in the La Ermita industrial estate in Pedrola ( Zaragoza ) this Friday, its first facility in Spain. With an investment of
€40 million and a surface area of over 17,000 square metres , the plant is already in the testing phase and is expected to reach full capacity over the next year, with a processing capacity of over 100,000 tonnes per year and up to 80 direct jobs created.

The facility specializes in the treatment of metals such as aluminum, copper, lead, zinc, brass, and stainless steel from incinerated urban solid waste and fragmented material from, for example, ships or airplanes, making it a benchmark in the circular economy and technological innovation.

The company’s founder, Ejvind Pedersen, was responsible for inaugurating the space at an event attended by the President of the Government of Aragon, Jorge Azcón, institutional representatives, local authorities, and the media.

A REFERENCE FOR THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY IN SOUTHERN EUROPE

“This is a very good thing for the future, because we can regenerate aluminum, a metal needed worldwide ,” emphasized Ejvind Pedersen, CEO of the group. He explained that one of the most innovative elements of the Zaragoza plant is its ability to jointly process different non-ferrous metals , something that is not possible in other European countries where the company operates, such as Denmark, the United Kingdom, or Germany, due to the need to separate them.

The plant will operate three shifts daily to maximize the profitability of its technologically intensive equipment, and Scanmetals has not ruled out the possibility of this being the first step toward developing the business in the Iberian Peninsula. ” We have clients in Spain because the country has many foundries that need our metal , and there is also a lot of fragmented material here,” commented Pedersen, who emphasized the location of the industry in Aragon because “it is in the center of Spain.”

The businessman also praised the institutional support and emphasized that this is the group’s first plant capable of processing multiple types of metal on a single line, which strengthens its long-term economic viability. “From day one, we’ve had incredible support, and we are very grateful,” said the Danish businessman.

A KEY INDUSTRY FOR THE FUTURE OF ARAGON

For his part, Jorge Azcón hailed the establishment of Scanmetals as an example of a “differentiated and forward-looking” industry , framing its arrival within the context of the economic transformation Aragon is undergoing. “We are seeing billions of euros of investment pour into our Autonomous Community, and companies like Scanmetals will be key to meeting this industrial demand,” he emphasized.

The DGA leader argued that the circular economy, recycling, and sustainability are not only an environmental commitment, but also an opportunity for economic growth and the creation of quality jobs. “The circular economy will be one of the major industries that will grow in the coming years. This is not only good news for the present, but also a guarantee for the future,” he stated.
