The President of the Government of Aragon, Jorge Azcón , announced the investment of 9.8 million euros for the wine sector this Wednesday in Fuendejalón. According to him, this is 2 million euros more than in 2024 and 2.3 more than in 2023, representing a 31% increase compared to 2023. “This is the most important boost that the Government of Aragon has given to the wine sector in the last 5 years and, in addition, we are doing it by allocating 31% more of our own funds than last year,” defended the leader of the Executive.
The aim of this investment effort is to give a definitive boost to a sector as important and representative for Aragon as the wine sector. These funds will serve, among other measures, to promote Aragonese wine and its differentiated quality in national and international markets; support the Regulatory Councils of the Denominations of Origin and help with the industrialization and modernization of the sector.
The aim is also to bring wine closer to consumers , especially younger ones; to help with the reconversion of vineyards; to launch the wine registry required by Europe and to collaborate with important projects such as ‘Cariñena European City of Wine 2025’ or ‘ Zaragoza , World Capital of Garnacha’.
“With all these actions we aim to make our wines more attractive and well-known on the international market, at the level of other Spanish and European wines. The decline in sales is not a problem of production but of promotion ,” said Azcón.
Aragon has just over 28,000 hectares of vineyards , which last year produced almost 108 million kilos of grapes and produced nearly 80 million litres of wine . This sector accounts for around 1.5% of the GDP of the Community, with more than 11,700 jobs and an economic impact of more than 105 million euros.
“The wine industry is the backbone of our territory and generates economy and employment in our rural environment. In this way, it fixes population and keeps our towns and traditions alive. In short, it helps fight against depopulation,” said the regional president.
SUPPORT FOR THE BORJA FIELD
The Campo de Borja Designation of Origin , where this initiative has been presented, is going to be one of the beneficiaries of this aid so that they can continue producing and promoting their wines. Specifically, the organization is going to receive more than one million euros, 100,000€ of which will be destined for the much sought-after headquarters of the Regulatory Council of its Designation of Origin . Likewise, projects related to historic Garnachas or wine tourism will be promoted.
