The town of Villamayor de Gállego is chosen by the Costa Group to build its Clave project, which will involve an investment of 469 million euros and the creation of up to 3,200 jobs upon its implementation. This new plant will be born with the desire to implement an entire platform of agroindustrial , biopharmaceutical and logistics activities in the Ebro Valley, positioning Aragon as a pioneer territory in the innovation and transformation of a key sector for the Spanish economy.
This Key project will be developed in two phases, each with a five-year horizon, which will begin to be executed once the PIGA is approved. The first phase will encompass up to four facilities, with its corporate headquarters for 40 workers; a biotechnology campus ; a poultry warehouse and the logistics distribution center , with capacity for 140 trucks per day. Meanwhile, the second phase includes all investment in pork .
In this way, the poultry warehouse will be composed of a chicken and turkey slaughterhouse, with a cutting and packaging room, with the capacity to slaughter one million birds per week. It will be developed in a 40,000 square meter building, with 1,000 direct workers and generating a flow of 65 trucks per day; a prepared meals plant , in a 20,000 square meter industrial facility, with 300 direct workers; a frozen plant ; a protein factory; a feed factory with a production of 250,000 kilograms per day; and a bird incubator.
Likewise, the pig facility will centralize some of the infrastructure that the Costa Group currently has dispersed in various territories, mainly in Catalonia , taking advantage of the positive impact of the central location of the platform. It contemplates the creation of a pig slaughterhouse , with a cutting and packaging room, with 1,500 workers and a slaughter capacity of 12,000 pigs per day; a frozen plant ; a prepared meals plant; and a feed factory with a production capacity of 2,000,000 kilograms per day.
UP TO 3,200 JOBS
According to the report presented by the Costa Group, the project will have a total budget , once all its development phases have been completed, of 469.1 million euros. Of these, 62 million euros would correspond to the urbanization and 407.1 million euros to the total investment planned for the implementation of the different activities. Likewise, it estimates the creation of 304 jobs during construction, and between 2,500 and 3,245 permanent jobs during operation, depending on the development of each phase.
Thus, according to the latest data available from the Aragonese Institute of Statistics (Iaest), 192 unemployed people were registered in the month of February 2024 in the town of Villamayor de Gállego and 34,481 in the Central Region of Zaragoza , so the Creation of a platform for agroindustrial, biopharmaceutical and logistics activities by the Costa Group in Villamayor de Gállego would be a boost to reducing local unemployment, which will obviously have to supply this facility with a workforce.
URGENT EXPROPIATION OF THE LAND
In total, the project is located on land slightly larger than 1.5 million square meters, of which 25% is private property and 75% belongs to the Villamayor de Gállego City Council . Consequently, it will be necessary to proceed with the forced expropriation of the land, which will be undertaken urgently , including a connecting road between the A-2 and the A-129 road, which will have interposed roundabouts that allow easy internal circulation in the area.
