ALFAMA NEIGHBORHOOD

One way to delve fully into the heart of Lisbon is by exploring the famous Alfama neighborhood , one of the oldest areas of Lisbon and characteristic for being the traditional fishermen’s neighborhood . Visitors can wander aimlessly through its narrow alleys and whitewashed houses, being surprised by each architectural corner that shows the vestiges left by Romans, Muslims and Jews. In addition, it is one of the ideal places to listen  to fados , the typical song of the city.

ST. GEORGE’S CASTLE

If you travel to Lisbon, it is essential to take a trip to the Castle of Saint George , an imposing monument located between the neighborhoods of Alfama and Castelo, at the top of the highest hill in Lisbon. Through its walls you can enjoy incomparable panoramic views of the city and the Tagus River, while you explore the ancient fortifications and its gardens.

Inside the castle, visitors will be able to see the Moniz Gate, Praça Nova, the castle dungeons, the arch of Saint George, the Patio de Armas, the Tower of Ulysses and the camera obscura. In addition to these locations of the castle, there is a small museum on the same grounds.

LISBON CATHEDRAL

Another stop on the tour that visitors cannot miss is the Lisbon Cathedral , better known as Sé de Lisboa. Inside is one of the city’s greatest treasures, the remains of Saint Vincent, patron saint of Lisbon. According to legend, two crows accompanied the coffin as it was transported to the city.

Admission to this romantic-style Cathedral is free. However, the cloister located inside has a fee. This is made up of four different rooms that display various exhibits.

JERÓNIMOS MONASTERY AND BELÉM TOWER

Lisbon has two monuments declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO , the Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower . The Jerónimos Monastery is a mandatory point on every tourist’s itinerary to admire the decorative details of the Portuguese Manueline style façade and explore its interior, where there are impressive works of art and the tomb of Vasco de Gama.

Any tourist should try the belém pastries , made of puff pastry and cream, which are made in the area, since they are the typical sweets of the city.

UPPER DISTRICT OF LISBON

Younger tourists cannot miss visiting the Alto neighborhood of Lisbon, known for its nightlife, full of bars and places to have a few drinks while enjoying music. Its streets have an avant-garde style and are full of fashion stores that are interspersed with modern restaurants. In addition, it is quite likely to hear fados.

SINTRA

If you travel to Lisbon it is essential to take a short trip during the day to the tourist city of Sintra . It is known for its colorful monuments, palaces and its numerous gardens, as they look like something out of a Disney movie.
