During last night’s celebration of the Openbank Literature Awards by Vanity Fair held in Madrid, the name of a Zaragoza bookstore that emerged as winner in this category resonated. Specifically, it is the Cálamo bookstore , which has been considered the most outstanding bookstore of 2023 in the entire country.

Located in Plaza San Francisco, since 1981, the Cálamo bookstore has been offering books and with it, culture and knowledge, to all Zaragoza residents. For this work, in addition to the award she received last night, she had already been awarded on other occasions with the Cultural Bookseller Award granted by the Federation of Publishers Guilds in Spain.

A GALA WITH A PROTAGONISM FOR WOMEN IN THE WORLD OF BOOKS

The journalists and writers Sandra Barneda and Lucía Taboada were in charge of presenting last night the ceremony held in Madrid that brought together numerous personalities from the field of culture and literature at the Ritz hotel. Furthermore, during the gala the role of women in the world of books was highlighted and, without a doubt, the protagonist was the North American writer Siri Hustvedt, who collected the award for best literary career.

The North American writer Siri Hustvedt traveled to Madrid to receive the award for the best literary career, and both in her meeting with the press and in her award reception speech she provided exciting reflections on her literary and life moment, marked by the illness of her husband Paul Auster – whom she said had started working after a long time – or the excitement of her new life as a grandmother, in contrast to her fear of a world in which authoritarian overtones are emerging throughout the world, something that will serve as background to the novel he is working on.

In her welcoming words, Patricia Benito, general director of Openbank, pointed out that “Somewhere in a book there is a phrase waiting for us to give meaning to our existence,” as Cervantes wrote. That was the idea with which more than two years ago the Openbank and Vanity Fair team decided to join forces to create a community where readers could share their love of reading. Today, the second edition of these awards once again supports literature and recognizes the talent of a sector that is so important to society.”

For his part, Alberto Moreno, Head of Editorial Content at Vanity Fair Spain, pointed out that “Vanity Fair has always moved in the territory of literature. Since it was born 111 years ago in the United States, many of the largest global firms have written in its pages. Something that represents great luck, but also entails great responsibility. Creating awards together with Openbank is the sublimation of one of the most interesting editorial projects I have had the privilege of working on, and especially if they allow us to recognize the works of such an exceptional harvest.”
