The reopening of Somport will be safe: the European Council undertakes to monitor it

The forecast dictates that it could be in January 2025 when traffic is reestablished at this Aragonese border point

The re-establishment of traffic at Somport and the safe flow of passengers and goods will be overseen by the European Council, an organisation that has undertaken this task after the insistence of the central and regional governments and the questions of the Aragonese MEPs (Rosa Serrano, from the PSOE, and Borja Giménez, from the PP). The continental executive also claims that there are concerns about the consequences of the closure of the French section of the RN134. It is hoped that traffic can be re-established in January.

The Commission has acknowledged the harmful effects on the economy of both regions, “not only for road hauliers, but also for local companies and their workers”, they have stressed. As the PSOE has pointed out , its MEP already insisted last September on the damage to the socio-economic development of the affected region. Later, the director of road transport of the European Commission, Kristian Schmidt, expressed his concern that the works be carried out quickly and as soon as possible.

The European body has now contacted the French authorities and has been informed that the
Interdepartmental Directorate of Atlantic Roads (DIRA) has submitted a proposal for repairing the damage based on the prior technical assessment. According to this proposal, the DIRA estimates that the works will be completed in 2025, although traffic could be restored as early as January 2025.
