Located in the heart of the Noguera Ribagorzana river valley, Montañana is a medieval treasure that transports you to bygone eras. Just two kilometres from Puente de Montañana, this monumental complex, declared a Site of Cultural Interest, offers visitors the opportunity to explore its cobbled streets and discover the history that permeates every corner.

If you are looking for a unique place for a getaway with family or friends this weekend, Montañana is one of those charming towns in Huesca that you cannot miss. Not only will you enjoy its historical beauty, but you will also be able to participate in group activities and visit even more in the different nearby towns.

MONTAÑANA: THE MEDIEVAL VILLAGE OF HUESCA WITH 1,000 YEARS OF HISTORY

Walking through Montañana is like taking a trip into the past. Its two Romanesque churches and the ruins of ancient defensive towers invite you to imagine what life was like there in the Middle Ages. The history of Montañana dates back to no less than the 10th century, around the year 990, when it was a Christian fort and played a key role in the defensive line of the Pyrenees.

Over the centuries, its importance grew, especially under the influence of the Crown of Aragon and the military orders. Although it suffered a strong depopulation in the 20th century, today Montañana is being restored to recover its medieval splendor, thanks to initiatives that seek to preserve its heritage. Since 1999, the Government of Aragon has managed to recover much of Montañana’s medieval splendor through a restoration project.

The extraordinary architectural wealth of Montañana has earned it the titles of Historic-Artistic Site and Asset of Cultural Interest. From its prosperous past, it preserves two Romanesque churches, the remains of two castles and a beautiful medieval double-arched bridge that has become the emblem of the town. Crossing this bridge means immersing yourself in the Middle Ages.

WHAT TO SEE (AND WHAT TO DO) IN MONTAÑANA

The stunning views from the castle and the medieval bridge spanning the San Juan ravine are just some of the wonders the place has to offer. Every passageway and corner reveals fragments of its rich history, as if one were part of a fairy tale.

Dominating the village from above is the monumental Romanesque church of Nuestra Señora de Baldós, from the 12th century, whose spectacular bell tower was built in the 13th century, replacing a previous watchtower. Its interior is even more interesting, as it contains original linear Gothic frescoes from the 14th century.

The Cárcel tower surrounded by walls and the hermitage of San Juan, an excellent example of the Romanesque style, are other monuments to admire during the walk. You should also not lose sight of the two houses connected by a wooden balcony, located on Calle Mayor, which are a faithful reflection of the medieval life that once took place in these streets.

The best way to get to know the town is through the guided tours that are organised by the town’s tourist office every weekend. In addition, this Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th October, there will be a recreation of the 12th century Liturgy sung in Latin along with activities starting at 11:00 am. They will take place at the Monastery of Alaón, the hermitage of San Juan and the old Cathedral of Roda de Isábena.

For those who are more into nature and hiking routes, in the surroundings of Montañana there is a natural viewing point from which there are the best views of the village and its surroundings. In addition, it has a large number of marked routes among which the famous Natural Trail from Monfalcó to Congost de Mont-Rebei stands out, a unique route due to its incredible aerial layout, suitable for anyone who does not suffer from vertigo.

HOW TO GET TO MONTAÑANA

To reach this medieval village, you have to go to the Ribagorza region (Huesca). Travelling between Benabarre and Pont de Suert, you must take a detour to the left, shortly after passing the town of El Puente de Montañana.

When you need to take a break and fill your stomach, the town has the Hostal Condes de Ribagorzathe Hostal Restaurante Isidro and the Restaurante Pallás.
