First national reactions to the agreement between Stellantis and CATL to invest up to 4.1 billion euros to form a joint venture that will create a battery plant at the car manufacturer’s factory in Figueruelas. The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, wanted to communicate through the social network X that he feels “very satisfied” with the news and wanted to thank the presidents of both companies “for their commitment to Spain and their firm commitment to our country to promote a decarbonized future . ” “Public-private collaboration is visible in agreements such as the one sealed today ,” Sánchez said.
It was this Monday when the Spanish leader met in Moncloa with the president and CEO of CATL, Robin Zeng, among other company leaders. A meeting where they discussed the group’s investment projects in Spain and which served as a harbinger for the announcement that materialized this Tuesday. Both agreed on the need to “join forces” in the fight against climate change and decarbonization and shared tools such as Pertes to achieve this.
The meeting was also attended by the Minister of Industry, Jordi Hereu, who announced the negotiations between Stellantis and CATL for the implementation of the gigafactory and confirmed the allocation of
133.7 million euros from Perte VEC III for this project, which was the definitive boost. At the press conference after the Council of Ministers, Hereu stressed that the battery factory in Figueruelas is “a huge opportunity for Spain”.
“The fact that two large multinational companies have decided to launch a major transformation project in Aragon today is based on the enormous competitiveness of the Spanish industrial ecosystem and has a lot to do with the implementation of an active policy such as Pertes,” said the minister.
For her part, the Government spokesperson and Minister of Education, Pilar Alegría, stressed that the investment will bring “wealth and employment” to Aragon and wanted to convey her gratitude. “When there is news like this, it is not a coincidence, it is the result of constant work by this Government, of this positive news that we pass on to companies from abroad so that they can invest in our country. We want to be happy because it will benefit Spain and the Aragonese territory,” she said.
