The President of the Government of Aragon, Jorge Azcón, participated this Monday in the closing of the public consultation prior to the project of reopening the Canfranc – Bedous section that has been carried out in
Oloron. Through this event, the reactivation of the route closed since 1970 has been analyzed. During his speech, Azcón has shown his “ firm support for the reopening of the Zaragoza – Canfranc-Pau line ”, ensuring that “if we do not advance on this international line, we will fail to meet the objectives set by Brussels. Spain, France and the European Union deserve this reopening as soon as possible.”

“We need the central Pyrenees to remain open to travellers and goods. We are convinced that this cross-border crossing will serve to economically and socially reactivate both regions, Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Aragon,” he added. The head of the Executive has appealed to the fact that the positive aspects of this reactivation “far outweigh the possible effects ”, stressing that “the train is a sustainable means of transport, both in the environmental and economic aspects, and allows the necessary transit of people and goods on both sides of the border”.

He wished to thank the public consultation for taking place, highlighting that this process “has allowed social agents and civil society to learn about, debate and make contributions to the project, as well as to its potential impact on the region”. Following this consultation, a report will be produced with the conclusions and opinions of all the agents involved. During 2025, a public survey will be carried out to find out the usefulness of the project and, depending on the result, this work could be declared of Public Utility at the beginning of 2026.
