In the province of Teruel, where the cold wind cuts through the air and the landscape of mountains and valleys seems eternal, lies one of the most striking vestiges of the Spanish Civil War : the Teruel Front. This area, marked by one of the bloodiest and most decisive battles of the conflict, has preserved its trenchesbunkers and strategic positions, allowing today’s visitors to follow in the footsteps of the soldiers who fought in these lands in the frozen winters of 1937 and 1938. Over the years, this space has been recovered and transformed into a historical- cultural tour, known as ” Atrinchérate “, which combines tourism with memory and history.

The province of Teruel played a prominent role in the Spanish Civil War. There are currently a total of 17 places of interest related to the conflict in the Teruel region. These are marked spaces for access, with parking areas nearby. Interpretation tables have been installed and archaeological excavations have been carried out, as well as cleaning and tidying up of the land, which will allow travellers to enjoy their visit in a perfect state of conservation.

The geographical location of these vestiges is an important factor to take into account, since they are located in positions from where a large amount of territory can be seen, which makes the landscape that can be enjoyed from them spectacular, thus becoming outstanding viewpoints.

A BEFORE AND AFTER IN TERUEL

Machine gun nests, bunkers, trenches and shelters. Without a doubt, the Civil War in the province of Teruel marked a before and after in the orography and landscape of the area. The Bunker of Alto de la Torana stands out widely . This hill was part of a Republican line, with trenches at different levels, a bunker and shelters dug into the rock. One of them, the deepest, could have housed the command of the Republican unit.

Also the Trenches of Cabigordo, where during the last days of the Battle of Teruel the most relevant events of this place were lived. Both enclaves are in Corbalán, and are joined to the Cerro Pino Redondo; the fortifications of Castelfrío, the Ladera de la Corraliza and the Hoyalta Shelters (El Pobo); the trenches of Portachuelo (Escorihuela); those of Serretilla – Mascarón (Argente); Morrón de la Tejería and Cerro de la Mina (Camañas); the trenches of Alfambra; the front of Santa Bárbara (Celadas); the trenches of Cerro Montero and Cerro del Piojo (Villarremado); the forts of Torrelacarcel and the Cabezo Alto Bunker (Torrelacarcel); or the Forts of Plano (Villel). Together they offer an ideal route for lovers of history and the Civil War.

In addition, an Augmented Reality app is available to discover the Alto de la Torana Bunker and the Cabigordo Trenches in a different way. Through the “Atrincherate” app , you can discover the authentic life of the soldiers on the Teruel front during the harsh winter of 1938, as told by some of the combatants in the conflict.
