The private resorts of Astún and Candanchú are reflecting ” good feelings ” after the start of the snow season, which, as they announced this Thursday, is being “slightly better” in figures than the last one, which was already good. In addition, it has been announced that the season is planned to be extended until the end of April and the uncertainty is about the public’s response in the final stretch, coinciding with Easter and St. George’s Day. Remember that the slopes opened on December 13.
In a press conference held at the old Ámbar factory in the Zaragoza neighbourhood of San José (and in a freezing cold atmosphere similar to that of a ski resort), the deputy general manager of Astún, Andrés Pita, said that they are happy for the moment and insisted that “an upward trend” is expected as the slopes are in very good condition.
In figures, it is expected that between 40 and 50% of the skiable kilometres in Astún-Candanchú will be available by this weekend . In addition, it has been stated that the snow production is allowing the slopes already open to be kept, although not to extend the skiable kilometres. “We are pouring snow where we already had it and we are spending more. It is not possible to extend the area,” Pita specified.
BEST SKI RESORT IN SPAIN
The CEO of Candanchú, Fernando Montón, was also present at the heart of the Zaragoza beer brand. He focused on the fact that Astún-Candanchú has been recognised as the best ski resort in Spain at the prestigious World Ski Awards 2024, highlighting that the union of the two resorts is a great tourist attraction that is complemented by the leisure and hospitality offer, generating wealth for the entire Valley.
” Astún and Candanchú complement each other . Candanchú offers very steep slopes and other areas for beginners that no one else has. Astún offers many intermediate level slopes,” said Montón. Pita agreed with this, adding, laughing, that the prize “was a given” as it offers a unique offer in which everyone who goes “finds their level.”
The attraction of Jaca as the nerve centre of ‘Aprés-Ski’ was also recalled, stressing that everything counts . “Communications too. We offer something that is not simple,” recalled the deputy general manager of Astún. Among the new features, the new mascot of the 100K campaign that the brewery is presenting together with the resorts was unveiled.
THE CABLE CAR AS AN ECONOMIC “TRANSFORMER”
Regarding the key project to link the stations by means of a cable car, Montón has specified that the works will begin this spring and, as already announced, will end at the end of 2026. They must be completed in less than two years and the works must stop during the winter season. Therefore, they do not interfere with the skiing campaigns. “This investment is a very important attraction, hopefully more will come,” they have valued.
It is worth noting that in this case, up to 35 million euros will be invested in several phases. Being one of the flagship projects of the Pyrenees Plan, it receives 22 million from the Government of Aragon; another 10 from European funds and the remaining 3 from the Provincial Council of Huesca (DPH). It will allow the route to cover 3.6 kilometres and go from 1,565 to 2,022 metres in height in 12 minutes .
OPEN DAY AFTERNOON
Representatives of local brands Voladora, Loco Monky, Nordica, X Bionic, Scott and Tourism of the Provincial Council of Huesca were also present at the presentation. From 5:00 to 8:30 pm this afternoon they will be in the original Ámbar workshops to present their new products. At this event, open to the public, attendees will be able to, in addition to enjoying Ambar beer, participate in games, raffles and visit the market dedicated to snow sports.
All of this will be livened up by BARAMBAM’s resident DJ, Alfredo Gavín. “It’s an opportunity to find out about Astún-Candanchú’s offering and about technical equipment. There will be DJs and lots of beer,” said the communications director of Ámbar and the Ágora Group, Enrique Torget.
